San Marco Has Two Event Calendars. Here's How to Tell Them Apart.

Stand in Balis Park on a Saturday morning and you'll see the same three stone lions that have watched over San Marco Square since the fountain was restored in the 1990s, a nod to the piazza in Venice the neighborhood borrowed its name from. What you won't see, unless you're paying attention, is which of two organizations put whatever is happening that day on the calendar. San Marco runs on two separate event schedules that share the same three parks, and knowing the difference tells you more about how the neighborhood actually works than any list of "things to do" ever could.

The two groups are the San Marco Preservation Society, founded in 1975 to protect the neighborhood's historic character and parks, and the San Marco Merchants Association, whose calendar exists to pull foot traffic to the shops and restaurants ringing the square. Both use Whatley Park, Davin Park, and Balis Park as their stage. Neither runs the other's programming. The result is a neighborhood where the same three blocks host a wine walk in spring and a beer-soaked 5K in fall, for entirely different reasons.

Two Organizations, One Set of Parks

The Preservation Society's flagship event is Wine Down in the Parks, a spring evening across Whatley, Davin, and Balis parks with tapas, wine, and live music from neighborhood venues. This year's edition, held Saturday, April 18, coincided with the Society's 50th anniversary, a milestone that makes sense given the group's founding date. The money raised goes toward maintaining and improving the historic parks themselves, which is the Society's entire reason for existing.

The Merchants Association runs a different kind of calendar, one built around drawing people to the businesses along San Marco Boulevard and around the square. The 5th annual San Marco Beer Fest in March, for instance, was presented directly by "San Marco Merchants," not the Preservation Society, and featured more than 30 local vendors pouring craft beer in Balis Park. Fitness in the Park, a recurring series hosted by Bitty and Beau's Coffee San Marco and Superior Body Sculpting, is tagged on the Merchants Association's own community calendar as a member-hosted event. Same parks, different sponsor, different purpose.

Same Month, Different Purpose

October makes the split easiest to see. On October 2, the Preservation Society hosts its Concert in the Park at Fletcher Park, a straightforward evening of live music and lawn seating that exists to give residents a reason to be in a park the Society maintains. Fifteen days later, on October 17, the Merchants Association's Oktoberfest event takes over Balis Park with a 5K and one-mile run, axe throwing, and free beer and brats courtesy of Tepeyolot Cerveceria. Runners are encouraged to show up in dirndls and lederhosen. The event is explicitly tagged as SMMA member-hosted.

Neither event competes with the other for a date, but they don't coordinate either. That's the pattern across the year: the Preservation Society's offerings tend toward quiet and civic, the Merchants Association's toward loud and commercial, and the calendar simply accommodates both because the parks are small enough and the neighborhood is dense enough that everything happens within walking distance of the fountain.

What Each Group Actually Pays For

Story Time in the Square is the one line item where the two calendars actually touch. The Preservation Society runs it jointly with San Marco Bookstore, a reminder that the split isn't absolute, just structural.

The Businesses Around Balis Park Keep Turning Over

While the two calendars stay fixed to the same parks year after year, the storefronts around them change constantly. The longtime home of Bistro Aix at 1440 San Marco Boulevard became Café San Marco and Bar San Marco in February 2026, a Cuban-inspired breakfast and lunch spot by day and a cocktail and tapas bar by night, opened by David Revuelta and Daimi Morales for around $60,000 in startup costs. Across Hendricks Avenue, the former Syrene boutique space is becoming Bold City Wings, a fourth-generation family concept with a $250,000 total business investment according to permit filings. Saleya Riviera Café, a French and Italian spot run by husband-and-wife chefs Scott and Gabby Alters, opened in the square in November 2025.

Scott Alters put it simply after opening:

"We are just seeing a real rejuvenation of the neighborhood, and we've gotten to be witness to that."

The owner behind Bold City Wings chose San Marco for a related reason, describing it as "the ultimate example of a close knit community." Storefronts come and go on a business cycle measured in months. The parks and the two organizations that program them operate on a cycle measured in decades. That's the actual stability underneath San Marco's reputation as a walkable, established neighborhood: not that nothing changes, but that the framework holding the change together doesn't.

What's Actually on the Calendar Before the Year Ends

• August 14: San Marco Swing Dance, second Friday of the month, San Marco Community Center, free admission with donations supporting SMCC programs
• October 2: Concert in the Park, 6 to 8 p.m., Fletcher Park, hosted by the San Marco Preservation Society
• October 17: Oktoberfest 5K and one-mile run, 5 to 8 p.m., Balis Park, hosted by 1st Place Sports with beer from Tepeyolot Cerveceria
• November 28 and 29: the 28th annual San Marco Art Festival, Balis Park, roughly 30 curated artists, free admission, Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• December 5: the 31st annual Festival of Lights 5K, 5 to 8 p.m., Balis Park, benefiting Children's Miracle Network Hospitals
• December: Deck the Square, a tree-decorating fundraiser pairing roughly 30 Merchants Association member businesses with local nonprofits, followed by the Preservation Society's Luminaria the Saturday before Christmas

The first Saturday of every month also brings Story Time in the Square at 10 a.m., a small, recurring anchor that doesn't need a headline to matter.

None of this is a reason to buy or sell anything. It's a reason to understand what you're actually looking at when a listing description says a home is "steps from San Marco Square." That phrase usually means steps from Balis Park, and Balis Park means access to both calendars at once: the civic one that keeps the neighborhood's parks in good shape, and the commercial one that keeps its businesses full.
